What Water Features Flow With Your Backyard Design?

Designing your custom oasis means choosing pool water features that match your outdoor living goals. Whether itโ€™s the sound of a bubbling fountain or the elegance of a cascading waterfall, we can bring your vision to life with features that enhance tranquility and style.
Image

Bubblers

Bubblers provide playful water streams, perfect for kids, and create ambiance without extra masonry work. They are a budget-friendly option to add to your Baja shelf or spa, producing a relaxing sound and atmosphere in your backyard.
Image

Deck Jets

Deck Jets produce shimmering water arcs from your deck into the pool, often arranged in groups for added elegance. These water features provide visual and audible tranquility, adding a spectacular element to your pool.
Image

Pool Scuppers

Pool Scuppers deliver a peaceful cascade of water, creating a serene and elegant atmosphere. Scuppers are typically placed in an elevated area of the pool on a column or pool wall. You can customize the size, shape, and materials for your scuppers to perfectly fit the aesthetic of your outdoor oasis.
Image

Rain Sheer

A Rain Sheer adds the most dramatic display and sound of cascading water to your backyard. This luxurious addition adds an alluring visual and audible ambiance that will stand out amongst any other water feature.
Image

Sheer Descents

Sheer Descents create a thinner and wider waterfall with more of a glass-like appearance. These sheets of water still produce a heightened sense of tranquility but arenโ€™t as loud as a scupper. You can customize the size, shape, and materials for your sheer descents to perfectly fit the aesthetic of your outdoor oasis.
Image

Pool Water Bowls

Pool Water Bowls are large decorative pieces that are placed on top of pillars or the pool deck. Transform your environment with the peaceful sound of water flowing from these unique fountains. You can customize the size, shape, and materials for your Water Bowls to perfectly fit the aesthetic of your outdoor oasis.

Waterfalls & Grottos

Waterfalls and grottos are more than features, they are focal points. From contemporary sheer descents to naturalistic rock formations, these elements are designed to bring movement, sound, and visual interest to your space. Grottos add a sense of destination, creating tucked-away areas that feel both playful and private. Whether youโ€™re drawn to a clean, architectural finish or something that mimics the natural environment, each detail is designed to complement the surrounding materials and reflect your personal style.

When Water & Fire Work Together

Fire enhances water in all the right ways. A raised water wall lit with flame adds depth and visual rhythm. A fire-topped water bowl becomes a sculptural centerpiece. These elements invite you to look closer and stay longer. When we design fire and water together, the result is something that feels both elevated and personal, layered with light, sound, and movement.

California pools was the most responsive from the time I requested a quote and had great communication through to the end of the project. They had the resources needed even during the busy season and shortage of products. We love our pool and glad we chose them for our project!

So far, so good with CalPools. We are grateful we are working with Paul Swirski. He has guided us through the process thus far, and has been fair, honest, and professional. We came in with a vision, but a on a budget, and Paul's experience has helped us design an amazing pool for our new house. We will continue to update as the construction phase begins, but three cheers for Paul!

TOP NOTCH IN EVERY WAY My HAYWARD POOL PUMP failed out-of-warranty and CALPOOL assisted in getting it replaced by HAYWARD and then installed the PUMP at-no-cost; even though they were under no obligation to do so. Leslie was incredibly helpful and had the replacement pump installed the day after the PUMP arrived at my residence from Hayward. I recommend CALPOOL without reservation. Rick D. We are first time pool owners and had our first pool completed about a couple months ago and from the get-go we knew that Calpools AZ was our right pool builder choice. Mike L was so patient and helpful when we were selecting the finishing and layout of our pool. Our construction manager was Howard-what a nice and knowledgeable man, he walked us through the entire build process and kept us informed throughout the 8 weeks it took them to complete the pool. Last but not least, Marcee Walker, the superb customer service she provided us with was something you expect but rarely received. Anytime we asked for status she always responded promptly and if we had any concerns or reported any issues, she always responded with "we'll gladly take care of that for you right away". If you are looking for a pool builder, we would strongly recommend Calpools AZ, you will not regret it. Thanks again, we are truly enjoying and loving our new pool. The Delgadillos

Eric stepped in as project manager mid remodel and was also very helpful in checking on the job and keeping us informed! Noah has been terrific tooโ€ฆanswering any questions we have about warranty! Weโ€™ve been very happy with CPLโ€ฆthey were the original builders of our spool almost 20 years ago, and now our remodel! Itโ€™s been a pleasure working with them!

We are extremely pleased with our California pool and the professionalism shown by their staff. From start to finish the pool was completed within two months. Special thanks to Ron, Shawn and Marcee for their dedicated attention. We are new to Arizona and this is our first pool. We looked at many different companies but California Pool impressed us with their knowledge and personal service. We made the right choice! Thanks, The Grassi's

My project was medium sized, I guess, based on the different options that we originally discussed vs. what we ended up getting, which was a design for my entire empty backyard that included a pool, spa, fire pit, gas grilling island, artificial turf, pavers, and landscaping plants, trees, and the like. The project was divided into phases to allow us to get the grilling island and artificial turf at a later time, while having the necessary electrical and gas connections installed in the correct location, while the plumbing for the pool and spa where being done prior to putting down the pavers. When deciding on a company for our backyard project, we talked to several companies. Robby S. met with us, after hours on a few occasions to accommodate our schedules, and designed a very nice backyard. This accommodation was one of the deciding factors on choosing CPL. The communication of the status of the project was pretty good. Theresa G. sent e-mails detailing the schedule, which was spot on for the most part and updated as needed. When I (or my wife) had questions or issues, they were answered/resolved immediately, even after the project was completed. Thanks Robby, Duane, and Theresa! The construction manager, Duane Y., is awesome! He is very responsive, in that everytime I called or e-mailed him with a question or issue, he showed up at my house the next morning to make sure it was resolved. When filling my pool, Duane noticed that I had two hoses connected together. He reconfigured them so that they filled the pool twice as fast. The pool startup guy, Ryan, I believe, was very patient with us when training us during the pool start up and optimization. The construction crew did really nice and efficient work. They also kept the place tidy during construction and worked quickly. I'm really happy with the work that was done on my backyard transformation design, pool, spa, fire pit, and pavers by CPL. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to get a pool or transform your backyard, as I did.

I am in love with my new backyard... and CA Pools and Landscaping! From complete dirt (litterally) to a colorful masterpiece! Who would have thought that some trees, plants, lighting and turf would make me want to hang out in 100 (plus) degree weather. The entire job took two days. The crews were in and out and were very respectful and clean. I would highly recommend CA Pools not only for your pool, but for your landscaping remodeling needs!

California Pools is an absolute amazing company to work with. We met with many different companies to build our ideal pool. From the first meeting with Christopher Robinson, we knew this company was special. Chris listened to exactly what we wanted and made a computer image of our vision within 15 minutes. It was exactly what we had described!! Our Construction Managers Jordan and Steve were great people to work with. They kept us updated and on schedule. If something changed, they would contact us immediately with updates. Karl our Hardscape Manager was also on top of everything. He took every concern we had and made them right. We have heard horror stories of people building pools and things going wrong, not with this company. They were amazing!! We can not recommend CA Pools enough. Thank you CA Pools for making our dream backyard a reality!!!

California pools was great from the very beginning. My project manager Cody Risdon was extremely knowledgeable, personable, courteous and professional. They didn't cut any corners. They were extremely efficient and realistic in the expectactions and price. The final product turned out better than what I expected. Sara Dougan, Victoria Collins and Danielle DeMiguel were each assigned to manage a different aspect of my project to ensure efficiency, timeliness and quality. And I tell you what; they will treat you like family. I was completely at ease with each step of the project thanks to their dedication to the project and desire to make things right. They took the time to send my wife flowers when they found out my she just gave birth! Michael Moore was the construction supervisor and he was there at every step ensuring the project had the highest quality work. He told crews to redo countless small details that most people would overlook. He came to the job site several times a week to make sure things were done right. He kept an open dialogue and promptly responded to any concerns I had or corrections I requested. California Pools is a top notch company who has been around longer than most. They are more concerned with producing a quality product than earning a cheap buck. I honestly couldn't be happier with these guys, and I would trust them without reserve.

Our experience was excellent with California Pools and Landscape. We met with Steve R the project manager at the Chandler office. Steve was helpful and knowledgeable. In a 1 hour appointment we had a design we could see and a price to perform the work. The design/discovery session was very helpful as several of the ideas and materials Steve presented we had never seen and would not have known were options. We informed Steve that the most important aspect to us was a quality, safe, quick turnaround. Steve moved the process through design and permitting quick (our project was a landscape project no pool) within three weeks of our appointment Jamin W had his crew on site performing work. The crew showed up everyday and cleaned up at the end of their workday. I actually never saw or met the crew. Had I not looked in the backyard I would have never known they were there. California Pools and Landscape had the job substantially complete in just over a week (some minor asthetic items took a bit longer but we're not critical to our project and were not a huge concern.). After they completed the project Luis came by to walk the quality and perform an owner training. The one negative is the payment process. You must make most of the payments (significant amountsโ€‹) prior to the work being performed. If you want to pay on a credit card there is a 3% fee which adds up. We were very nervous about paying before the work was complete. We called Steve to talk through this and he assured us they were not the type to run with your money. California Pools did not let us down and is a trust worthy company that holds up their end of the bargain. The bottom line you will pay a little more going through California Pools, but you will get a well planned design, a safe professional crew and a project that looks amazing.

California Pools are an EXCELLENT pool builder!!! November 2014 we put in our 3rd pool and backyard with them since our first in 1996!!! We have used them 3 times because they build GORGEOUS pools and backyards!!! They are VERY TALENTED, EFFICIENT AND THEY STAND BEHIND THEIR VERY HIGH END QUILTY WORKMANSHIP!!!! We have had minor cosmetic issues with our pool but MICHELE GARCIA in their Warranty Department is FANTASTIC!!!! She responds IMMEDIATELY to Warranty Requests and gets the guys right out to your house to do whatever has to be done to make your pool/backyard "perfect!!" IT IS SO REFRESHING to work with such a FRIENDLY, PROFESSIONAL AND VERY EFFICIENT person when you need a warranty issue taken care of!!! We can NOT say enough GREAT things about CA POOLS...from the initial meeting with TIM who designed our pool to Laurie who helped us pick out everything to Michele Garcia who has addressed any warranty requests we have emailed to her VERY PROMPTLY AND WITH SUCH CARING!!!

My pool and backyard construction was just recently completed. From start to finish, California Pools & Landscape handled the supply chain and labor issues professionally. Almost everything is handled through an app (communications with scheduling, installation dates, etc.) so you don't have to spend endless hours emailing or calling to ask "what's next?". My project manager/designer was Cody Risdon who did an absolutely amazing job incorporating everything I asked. He was knowledgeable, courteous and incredibly professional. Sara handled all of the scheduling and a lot of the communications on when certain portions of the project were to be installed. She was (and still is) on top of everything. She responded efficiently and made the process easier. My construction manager Duane has also been great. As with any new construction, we do a punchout walkthrough when almost everything is complete to make any adjustments. Duane has been on top of everything that I have asked. While the process was long, the team at Cal made it easier. I'm thrilled with my yard, and can't recommend CPL enough. Thank you all!

I met with California Pools right after signing for my new build in 2021. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that it was going to take almost two years to finish the house. California Pools was awesome and patient with me the whole way. Once the new house was ready, California Pools was on-site the day after closing to start the process. Jordan Thrasher and Sara Dougan were wonderful to work with. Jordan answered every little question I had along the way. Sara was on top of scheduling to let me know when to expect people to be on-site and to handle other little emergencies along the way. I didn't expect that we were going to be able to use our pool this summer, but Jordan and team had the pool ready and gave the blessing to fill it by mid-June. My family absolutely loved having our pool and we made constant use of it. I can't thank California Pools, Jordan, and Sara enough for their efforts.

Can't say enough about California Pools and Landscape. Working with design planner Paul and construction manager Matt was courteous and professional from start to finish. Everything was laid out in advance, no surprises, proceeded like clockwork. When inevitable issues arose, we worked through several design changes, all without headache. Surprisingly, they even went above and beyond at times, exceeding even our high expectations. Today, we can't believe the paradise we live in, thanks to California Pools and Landscape!

When we first selected California Pools, we were extremely happy with the service and attention to detail. The end product was perfect! We recently had a need to engage with California Pool for some work that is within warranty and a item outside of warranty. And they immediately stepped up and sent out technicians and the communication was very consistent as they kept me informed throughout. From start to finish, California pools stepped up and delivered. We sincerely appreciate the support from the team, especially Leslie and Cari for their terrific coordination!!

Frequently Asked Questions About Water Features

Q: What Should I Consider Before Adding a Pool Water Feature?

When adding a Pool Water Feature, itโ€™s important to consider where youโ€™d like it located in your yard and what youโ€™d like it to sound like. Considering what the focal point is when looking at your backyard from your home will help you land on the ideal location for your water feature or pool water wall. A bubbler or deck jet will produce less sound than a scupper or Rock Grotto. For example, placing a scupper near your lounge area can create a relaxing atmosphere, while bubblers on your Baja shelf add playful aesthetics.

Q: What is the difference between a Scupper & Sheer Descent?

Scuppers are built with various options available for the width and size of the waterfall that falls into the pool, creating a relaxing noise. They are often installed on columns, pillars or water walls. A Sheer Descent creates a wider and thinner waterfall that produces a relaxing sound that isnโ€™t as loud as a Scupper.

Q: What if I want a design feature that has both a fire element and a water feature included?

As a custom and complete backyard builder, we can turn your dreams into a reality. Weโ€™ve built thousands of design features that incorporate both water & fire features, all custom-built to best fit their respective design aesthetic. Whatever sparks your backyard inspiration can be brought to life by our team of talented designers.

Q: Can Pool Water Features Be Added to an Existing Pool?

Yes, water features can be added to an existing pool! From soothing waterfalls to playful deck jets, we can seamlessly integrate features that enhance your poolโ€™s design and create a relaxing, dynamic backyard oasis.

Q: How do I choose a water feature for my pool?

Choosing the right water feature for your pool depends on your style preferences, backyard design, and the ambiance you want to create. Our designers can guide you through options based on your budget, pool size, and preferred style. Consider these factors:

  • Design Aesthetic: Features like waterfalls or rock grottos add a natural, resort-like feel, while bubblers and deck jets provide a sleek, modern touch.
  • Functionality: Think about how youโ€™ll use the featureโ€”deck jets or scuppers add elegance and sound, while bubblers are great for shallow areas where kids play.
  • Space and Budget: Larger features like rock grottos may require more space and investment, while smaller elements like scuppers or sheer descents can fit into more compact designs.
  • Customization: Look for features with options to match your poolโ€™s materials, such as tiles or finishes that align with your overall backyard aesthetic.

Q: Does a pool waterfall need its own pump?

Swimming pool waterfalls typically require their own pump to ensure optimal water flow and functionality. A dedicated pump allows the waterfall to operate independently from your poolโ€™s main circulation system, providing a consistent flow of water for a seamless and tranquil appearance. By having a separate pump, you can also control the water flow rate of the waterfall to match the ambiance you want in your backyard.

Q: Can water features like fountains and waterfalls help cool my pool?

Swimming pool water features like fountains and waterfalls can help cool your pool, especially in hot climates. The continuous water movement they create promotes evaporation, which naturally lowers the water temperature.

Q: How do I maintain a pool waterfall?

Regular cleaning is essential to prevent debris buildup, particularly around the spillway, to maintain the appearance and functionality of the waterfall.

Q: What should I consider before installing a pool waterfall?

  • Pool size: Ensure the waterfallโ€™s size is proportionate to your pool to maintain balanced water flow.
  • Aesthetics: Choose a design that complements your pool and backyard style.
  • Safety: Incorporate safety features to prevent injuries, especially if children use the pool.

Q: How long do pool bubblers last?

Pool bubblers typically last 5โ€“10 years with proper maintenance. Longevity depends on the quality of the bubbler, frequency of use, and regular care. Signs that a bubbler may need replacement include reduced water flow, clogging, or visible damage.

Q: How do pool bubblers work?

Pool bubblers operate by circulating water through a pump and hose, which then flows out of a nozzle to create bubbles. The size of the pump determines the intensity and number of bubbles produced, adding a dynamic effect to the pool.

Q: How do I maintain a pool bubbler?

To maintain a pool bubbler, clean the pump filter regularly and check for any blockages in the nozzle. Removing debris helps maintain consistent water flow and prevents wear on the system.

Q: Can I add lights to a pool bubbler?

Yes, lights can be added to a pool bubbler to enhance its visual appeal, especially at night. Many modern bubblers are compatible with pool automation and lighting systems for synchronized effects.

Q: Are pool bubblers worth it?

Pool bubblers are an affordable and stylish way to add personality and a touch of elegance to your pool. Perfect for Baja shelves or shallow areas, they create playful water streams and a relaxing ambiance, enhancing both the aesthetic and enjoyment of your outdoor space. With their versatile design and budget-friendly appeal, pool bubblers are an excellent addition to any backyard oasis.

Q: Will deck jets cool a pool?

Deck jets can help cool a pool slightly by promoting water circulation and evaporation as the water streams back into the pool. While the cooling effect is minimal, it can make the water feel more refreshing, especially on hot days.

Q: Can you add deck jets to an existing pool?

Yes, deck jets can be added to an existing pool. The process typically involves installing new plumbing lines and integrating the jets into the pool deck. While it may require some modifications to your current setup, consulting a professional ensures proper installation, compatibility with your pool system, and a seamless finish. Adding deck jets is a great way to enhance your poolโ€™s design and create a visually stunning and relaxing environment.

Q: How do pool deck jets work?

Pool deck jets operate by using a pump to send a stream of water arching gracefully from the pool deck into the pool. The water stream creates a shimmering effect that adds visual and auditory tranquility to the pool area. Many deck jets are adjustable, allowing you to control the height and angle of the water flow.

Q: Where do you put deck jets on a pool?

Deck jets are typically installed along the pool deck near the edge, spaced evenly to create a balanced look. Their placement depends on the desired visual effect and the layout of the pool area, ensuring they integrate seamlessly with the overall design. They are often installed in groups for maximum impact.

Q: What are pool scuppers?

Pool scuppers are openings on the side of a pool that allows water to flow out, often creating elegant visual and auditory effects. They assist in maintaining a steady water level, enhance water movement, and contribute to a calming atmosphere around your pool area.

Q: What are scuppers made from?

Scuppers can be crafted from materials such as copper, stainless steel, oil-rubbed bronze, or stone. These options allow for customization to match your pool's style and overall design aesthetic.

Q: How are scuppers installed?

Scuppers are typically installed in groups, often in threes, on raised walls, columns, or standard pool walls. Their placement enhances both the functionality and the visual appeal of your pool design.

Q: How much do scuppers cost?

The cost of a single pool scupper ranges from $100 to $300. However, the price may increase if additional structures like raised walls or columns are needed to house the scuppers.

Q: How do I clean pool scuppers?

Clean scuppers with distilled or purified water and a soft cloth. For water spots, use a product like Windex, and for light buildup, mild soap or vinegar works well. Avoid abrasive cleaners like steel wool, sandpaper, mineral acids, bleach, or chlorine-based products to prevent damage.

Q: How often should I clean my scuppers?

Scuppers should be cleaned regularly, at least once a month, to maintain their appearance and functionality. Regular cleaning prevents buildup and keeps water flowing smoothly.

Q: How long can sheer descents be?

Sheer descents can range in length from 8 inches to 8 feet, making them versatile for various pool designs.

Q: How do you customize sheer descents?

The width of a sheer descent is the most customizable feature, allowing you to choose a size that matches your pool design and desired water effect.

Q: How do you install a sheer descent?

An inline strainer is required during installation to ensure smooth water flow and prevent debris from clogging the system.

Q: How much water do sheer descents need?

Sheer descents typically require 1 gallon of water per minute for every inch of the feature, ensuring a consistent and smooth water flow.

Q: How do you maintain sheer descents?

Maintenance is done by hand to prevent calcium and mineral deposits from building up, preserving the clean, smooth flow of water.

Q: How much noise do sheer descents make?

Sheer descents are quieter than traditional waterfalls, creating a peaceful and relaxing environment in your backyard.

Q: What are the different water effects of sheer descents?

Sheer descents can create various effects, from a silent sheet of water to a rushing waterfall or a glass-like cascade, depending on the water flow.

Q: How do you create a rainfall effect with a sheer descent?

To achieve a rainfall effect, increase the water flow to the sheer descent. The stronger the flow, the farther the "rain" effect will project from the wall.

Q: How do I clean a pool water bowl?

To clean a pool water bowl, use a soft cloth and mild soap to gently remove debris and buildup. Regular cleaning helps maintain its appearance and functionality.

Q: What size bowl should I get?

Choose a bowl size that fits your pool deck and complements the overall design. A well-proportioned bowl enhances the aesthetic while providing a striking water feature.

Q: Can I add lighting to my pool water bowl?

Yes, many pool water bowls can be equipped with LED lighting to create an eye-catching effect, especially at night.

Q: Are there any safety concerns with pool water bowls?

Ensure the bowl is securely installed and supervise children around the pool area to maintain a safe environment.

Q: Can I add a grotto to an existing pool?

In most cases, a grotto can be added to an existing pool, depending on the poolโ€™s structure and the space available. Consulting a professional pool builder ensures proper integration and design.

Q: What are the maintenance considerations for a grotto?

Grottos require regular cleaning to remove debris that can collect in the crevices of the rockwork, helping maintain both functionality and appearance.

Q: Do I need a special pump for a grotto waterfall?

A dedicated pump is typically needed to power the waterfall feature, ensuring a smooth and consistent water flow.

Q: What are some design options for a grotto?

  • Cave-like design: Offers a more enclosed, private space with a deeper interior.
  • Rock wall with waterfall: Features a smaller rock formation with cascading water.
  • Grotto with a bench: Includes a built-in seating area for relaxation within the grotto.

Visit one of our state-of-the-art pool, spa, and landscape design centers in Chandler, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, and Surprise, Arizona, or schedule an in-home meeting with one of our designers. Letโ€™s start the conversation about your own personal resort. From there, it wonโ€™t take you long to see for yourself why weโ€™re Arizonaโ€™s preferred swimming pool builder.
